I suggested that having an entrance to each room would give the house a sense of stature, a more noble mood fitting its size and design. If we created cased openings between the different areas, this would give each space a sense of being its own room, rather than having an open, loft feel.

Between the kitchen and living room, I designed a pair of cased openings flanking a large peninsula of cabinetry in the center, which can be used as a station for serving food during parties. The two points of entry allowed for great flow and maintained open sight lines. I also added a cased opening between the living and dining rooms. I divided the bar area with cased openings and a custom cabinetry serving station so that a bartender could serve from behind it. I recommended this design because this family could use it as a bar but also style it as a butler’s pantry when they resell the residence later. What started as one large room with four different zones was now four separate rooms: living room, kitchen, dining room and bar. Creating deliberate rooms also allowed me to design various ceiling treatments where I could use pecky cypress, which has a lot of visual interest and texture due to its pitted surface and light color.

To create intimate spaces out of such the large expanse of rooms that comprised the hub of the home, I normally would use dark colors in contrasting schemes. But because we were limited to keeping the rooms all neutral, I had to deploy more covert decorative schemes. I selected sheer embroidered fabric in a flowing vine pattern for the living room window treatments to soften the hardness of the exposed pecky cypress on the ceiling and the stone fireplace inglenook. The pattern gave a busy visual effect, contributing more texture without feeling heavy.

For the upholstery, a mix of velvet, linen and embroidery with wood beading supplied texture and pattern play, creating interest and making the room feel cozy. I placed two 9 x 13-foot Oushak-style rugs side by side to make one large 13 x 18-foot area rug. The large footprint added softness and a dark contrast to all the ethereal colors of the rooms.
